Theaster Gates’s Black Chapel opens to the public at Haus Der Kunst on October 25 For the sixth edition of DER ÖFFENTLICHKEIT, Gates presents a monumentous installation incorporating the architecture of the building’s 800-square-meter central hall.
Engaging with three structural pavilions within the space, the installation stretches throughout the building featuring a multitude of public sculptures, documents, ready-mades and advertising media. All of these elements which Gates carefully curates operate as symbols of Black identity. Additionally, Jesse Owens’ record collection (from Theaster Gates’s personal collection) will be presented to the public for the first time in Haus der Kunst’s Archive Gallery. The exhibition will remain on view through July 19, 2020.
